Stations

Every station is a first-order NWS site that issues a Daily Climate Report (CLI) and reports routine hourly METARs. The stations are not a random sample: 22 of the 23 are major city airports and one is New York Central Park, chosen because a daily temperature contract settles on them, which biases the set towards the dry south-west and the north-east corridor (methodology §1.1). The climatological day is local standard time all year, so each station carries a fixed UTC offset and daylight saving is never applied (methodology §2.1).

Scored days are for lead day 1, the last 90 days, 00Z, bilinear, instantaneous temperature — the default view, counting forecast systems only (the persistence baseline is not one). A station with no number has no scored day in that view yet. Δz is the station elevation minus the mean elevation of the 0.25° cell it sits in; |Δz|×6.5 K/km is the first-order temperature offset that difference implies — a representativeness error charged to the model that no forecast can remove.
